History Of The Club

Ngee Ann Polytechnic Strings and Guitar ensemble (NPS) was established in 1992 by Mr.Gan See Wee, with the goal of promoting classical music amongst students. The club started out with a meagre 10 members and has since developed progressively to lots of members currently.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic Strings has performed at many outdoor events and functions. The main annual events are Virtuoso and Family concert. Other than performances, Ngee Ann Polytechnic Strings also organises various activities like the annual Music camp and Tea party to facilitate more bonding and a sense of unity between the club's members.

And to facilitate our new members, we also organise Guitar/Strings Fairs where we bring guitar/strings products and accessories to our club from vendors like Synwin, Maestro Guitars etc. This is to give them an opportunity to try and test the instruments with ease and also buy them at more affordable prices.

In the year 2006, Niibori Guitar was introduced to our club and has also played the instrument for the first time during our Virtuoso 13th Concert.

The club also aims to further inspire the club members to strive to bring the club to greater heights and to further enhance the reputation of Ngee Ann Strings by constantly performing at various functions outside school, which would bring greater glory to Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

Post Camp Note

.: Post Camp Note :.

Hi Everyone!

I'm so glad that the camp went so well and i wanna THANK ALL of YOU for being part of the camp! We wouldn't have so much fun if you all didn't turn and very single on e of you did great! I really appreciate the participation and enthusiasm everyone contributed, and each one of you helped out in this camp in one way or another whether you know it or not. I can se a bonding within each team and towards the end, a very strong & beautiful bonding within the whole camp!

Like Frans said: We are NPS, WE ARE FAMILY!!!

I would also like to SPECIALLY thank my Committee members, who've helped me with so much planning, preparation and execution of their roles. Everyone in the committee is as important as each other and you all did more than what you're supposed to do and i really really appreaciate it!
All of you are really nice and helpful to one another and it was an honour to be able to work with you guys! I had so much fun oganizing this camp with you guys!

All of you are the Best!

To my Committee Not in any particular order:

Frans and Vanessa,
The both you have been by my side helping me out every moment of the camp and planning so many things together! All the games were so fun and enjoyable because of you two! I'm lost for words now but the most important point that i can think of now is that I really couldn't have run the camp as well as it did without you two! Frans is so sexy and Vanet's always making the both of us laugh by laughing LOUDLY herself. Sweet Memories of the camp!

Gloria and Kelvin,
Gloria helped me with so many things that I'm afraid I might leave some things out!(like sai kang! Haha we enjoyed though) She's the one who called the whole strings side and alumni to come for the camp ans she helped me a lot by coordinating the camp and generally taking care of everyone's needs. She's always offering help to people around and taking care of of us! Kelvin called the guitar side and he's always got new funny ideas for the games and both of them helped in collecting the camp money as well!

Nicole and Jaei,
The two of you never fail to impress me with your friendship and funny movements. The both of you have been 'feeding' everyone throughout the camp and taking care of the food and drink issues and enjoy throwing rubbish into the binbelow. You're aiming better now eh! You've also been helping around a lot and you brighten up all our tired minds! =) btw, you two are real sleepy logs when you're tired!

Annabel,
You're always so hypre and happy about everything and offers help in every situation!(even when you're tired) When we have practices in classrooms, she's always asking me if she should call security to open it now!(bout 45mins before prac) Efficient and always ready for action! And you sacrificed your shower time to do sai kang with us! =)

Hui Yun,
You've been collecting the camp money and handling the admin stuff with Gloria and Annabel and others, and I wanna thank you for being brave in collecting money from people as well as as being participative during the whole camp!

Thi Ha, Godfrey and Kwang Yee,
Three of ya'll stayed one night before the whole committee to do the deco and I really appreciate your hard work! Thi Ha planned the whole deco scenario(and slept Very very little) and they executed it all together! You three also helped a lot with the logistics and games and I enjoyed Kwang Yee's violin solo!

Chris,
Though you only managed to come on the third day of camp because of your attachment, I wanna thank you for the food and drinks prep you did with Nic and jaei and for coming down to help us out and participate with your group members! Thanks for the ice box too! (and sorry bout that huge scare on sat night!)

Special thanks to:

Mr Kong, Mr Ma, Mr Alex

NPS Almuni, for coming down to help us
Faizar, our safety officer

Jason, our guest photographer

Stewart, our lifeguard

SCC, for coming down to support us

Life Sci Society, for lending us your equipment

M.E. Society, for lending us your equipment

Mr Jacob, pool and sports facility in-charge

Miss Edwina, for making bookings for us

Mr Ian Wong, for approving our budget

SDAR, for lending us equipment

And last but not least, Everyone who attended the camp!

Thank you all for making this camp successful and may the sweet, unforgettable memories during the camp be kept in our hearts forever!

Yours truly,
Timothy

Assemble at Music Room, 12.30pm sharp
Attn: Have your lunch before reporting

Hey people! This is Timothy, President of Music Camp 2006. Along with my committee, I've organized a very fun-filled Music Camp for all of you! It is compulsory for everyone in NPS to attend the camp and many Alumni members are coming down for the camp too! Those who have not confirmed their attendance on the camp, pls contact Gloria or Kelvin immediately.

We are also making a Music Camp T-Shirt for everyone, so it would be great if everyone could pay $12 (which includes the shirt, food and other camp costs) for the camp by Saturday, 16th Sept 06, because we are rushing to get the shirts printed and the money collected so far is very little. So I hope everyone would cooperate with us and make this camp a successful one! See you all at the camp!

Just an excerpt for the China Philharmonic Orchestra:

China's foremost orchestra will be in Singapore for the first time to bring you an exquisite evening of classics.

Led by prolific conductor Long Yu, CPO's debut performance in Singapore will include Wagner's Tannhauser Overture, Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings and the work of China composer Ye Xiaogang's ambitious recreation of Gustav Mahler's The Song of the Earth. Featuring China's renowned baritone Yuan Chenye and soprano Lu Qi, the work received critical acclaim during the orchestra's tour to America in 2005.

The China Philharmonic Orchestra has collaborated with many renowned musicians of our time and has just completed a tour of 22 cities in the United States, Canada, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, United Kingdom and Germany to standing ovations.

And for the two violinists:

Honoured with the highest performance awards in the Paganini International Violin Competition in Italy, both Lu Siqing and Huang Mengla represent two of the finest and most accomplished violinists to come out of China.

Known for their renditions of Paganini, their interpretation of the 24 Caprices bring new meaning to the masterpieces. This evening’s programme also includes Waxman’s Carmen Fantasy performed by Huang, Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen by Lu and Elgar’s Salut d’amor, a duet. Shane Thio accompanies on piano.

All of them have been featured in the papers recently, with the papers urging everyone to go watch as it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Last time I checked Sistic, the tickets are really going fast.

I seriously urge everyone to go, especially people from the Strings side. For those who thought you saw some really crazy playing at the Foon Yew concert or at the National Violin and Piano competition, you have absolutely no idea what you will witness at this concerts...especially for the violin duo one. If you have never seen or heard Paganini's 24 Caprices, be in for a big shock man.

No disrespect to Mr Kong, but they are probably at his level, or better.

Anyone who is interested please please let me know before the 28th of Jan, which means this Saturday. I will try and get the tickets at student price, which is $30.

For more information, you can go to the sistic website for the China Philharmonica Orchestra at Here

And for the violin duo Here

And their own Homepage

Due to the fact that I am quite quite excited, I have taken the liberty in sourcing out what pieces they are going to play, so for the China Philharmonic Orchestra, they will be playing:

Richard Wagner: Tannhauser Overture
Tchaikovsky: Serenade for Strings
Ye Xiaogang: The Song of the Earth

And as for the violin duo:

Paganini: 24 Caprices
Waxman: Carmen Fantasy
Chen Gang: Miao Mountain Morning
Sarasate: Zigeunerweisen
Chen Gang: Sunshine over Tashkurgan
Elgar: Salut d'Amor
Monti: Czardas

Personally, I am more excited over the violin duo one, cause most of the pieces they will be playing are really famous ones.....beautiful ones too lol.

But anyway, as mentioned earlier, the China Philharmonic Orchestra will perform on the 4th of Feb, and the violin duo on the 7th, both starting their performances at 7.30, should probably last for about 1 or 1.5 hours at the most. And of course, both performances will be held at Singapore's most famous "durians".

For all the sk people, I meant the Esplanade.

So all those who are interested, let me know ok? And try and spread the word around cause I know for a fact that some people hardly come in here to read the wonderful stuff we post here.

Cheers.
